Many say that Munchausen was the most truthful man in the world. You will be able to confirm or – on the contrary – reject this statement for yourself when you come and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the witty Baron’s stories.
ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Our museum is the embodiment of dream and fantasy, where joy and wit are combined in an inseparable duet. The permanent historical exhibition “The World of Munchausen” offers an insight into the Baron as Prince Anton Ulrich’s pageboy on the Ukrainian steppes and at the Russian court, as an army officer, a loving husband, a passionate hunter and an enthusiastic storyteller – a man who enjoys life to the hilt, retaining the ability to laugh at himself and others, and to look at the world differently.
Munchausen spent some of the most beautiful years of his life with his wife, Jacobine, in Latvia, in Vidzeme, at Dunte Manor, where, for centuries now, people have been telling the fantastic stories of the Baron’s life. Dunte is a special place in the middle of Latvia. Here the sea meets the forest, in winter horses are tied to church steeples, and a hunter hits ten ducks with one shot, which immediately fall through the chimney into the frying pan.
In the room of Jakobine, Munchausen’s wife, you will see a true 18th century ladies’ paradise, while Baron Munchausen will greet you with the game he has just got – a string of ducks hunted with a single shot. Hunting trophies, knives, guns, a wax figure of Munchausen – that’s not all we’ll surprise you with.
Everything at the Munchausen Museum is real – just different!

Amusement Ship
We are very aware that our youngest visitors are endowed with explorative minds and brave hearts that are eager for adventure!
That is why, on the Museum grounds, we have the largest amusement ship in the Baltic States, built of wood. The ship is 30 metres long and 4.5 metres wide.
The ship is equipped with everything you need to take your little adventurers on a sea battle: 3 roller coasters and 2 tubes for crazy rides, 4 bridges, 5 swings, 6 barrels you can crawl through and several cannons that can not only scare your opponent, but maybe send someone to the moon.
Just like Munchausen’s imagination knows no bounds, there are no age limits for visitors, because everyone dreams, and it’s never too late to make one of your wildest fantasies come true.

The trail leads through the Vidzeme wetland forest and has 3 lengths for different levels of fitness: long 4.3km, medium 3.4km, short 1.0km. The longest trail will take you to the sea, where you can sunbathe on the white sands of the Vidzeme beach and swim in the sea.
Walking along the trail, you can experience the adventures of Munchausen, looking at the 55 characters of the story – bunnies, wild boars, wolves, whales, crocodiles – animated in wooden sculptures.
