Before man became active in agriculture, wild horses or tarpans, like taurs and sumbri, were a common part of nature in Europe.

The role of large herbivores such as tauruses, wild horses and sumburs in nature is very important. They contribute to the creation of biodiverse grasslands and directly or indirectly support thousands of other plant and animal species. Other herbivores (roe deer, deer, elk) cannot replace horses and gobblers in nature because their feeding conditions are different, so natural processes are disrupted. Pape demonstrates how the rhythm of nature is restored by the return of extinct species.
