Daugavpils Fortress is a popular place for walking for citizens and visitors of Daugavpils. The fortress is a unique architectural and cultural-historical monument of national importance. Daugavpils Fortress is the last bastion-type fortress in the world. From a bird’s eye view, the fortress resembles the shape of the sun, a star, a turtle or even a bat. Today it is one of the most popular sights in Daugavpils.

More about the fortress:

No less important is the fortress’s interior, where 80 buildings have survived to the present day and are connected by 10 streets, which have been given their historical names. Most of these buildings date from the 19th century. In recent years, several buildings have been restored in the fortress, such as the Water Tilt Building, which now houses the Daugavpils Fortress Culture and Information Centre and the fortress administration, the former Fortress Commandant’s House, which houses the Latgale Region Police Headquarters, and the former Artillery Arsenal, which houses the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre. Also, one of the four gates of the fortress has been restored – the Nicholas Gate, which was recognised as the best restoration in Latvia in 2014, the wooden bridge connecting the Nicholas Gate and the 1st bank lunette, the cordegards, as well as the cordegarde building itself.
