ABOUT THE MUSEUM

Kubalu School – Museum is the oldest surviving wooden log school house in Latvia. Here, students and visitors can explore the 19th century learning environment – the classroom displays old school benches, writing instruments and prose works.

The oldest surviving log schoolhouse in Latvia (19th century). Classroom furnishings, mantelpiece, restored farmhouse and walking paths.

“At the end of 1842 the new schoolhouse was ready, a large stately building of the same dimensions as now (20 axes long, 20 axes wide). At the beginning of 1843, after Epiphany, the new school was opened.”
It was the first and for 28 years the only school for peasant children on the Dundaga estate.

ADVISORY

Kubalu School – Museum is located in the Dundaga municipality between Talsi and Mazirbe, a little off the highway to the right a few kilometres before Dundaga. Here, in a quiet forest, you will find the oldest wooden log school house in Latvia (1842) with an ethnographic homestead and adjacent territory.

In the classroom you will find old school benches, blackboards, ink, a pen, a 19th-century school book and a bookcase. The schoolchildren’s prose. You can always learn, even a little, in such an old school.

In the museum exhibition you will see the old CLASSROOM and the teacher’s VIESISTABLE, you can look at the sky through the mantelpiece in the FIREPLACE and visit the memorial living room of the first teacher ERNEST DINSBERG.

For a moment of relaxation, the museum has a fireplace and walking trails.
The walking trails, marking the use of the school land during the manor, offer an insight into the landscape of the school farm and a moment of relaxation for every traveller.
