🎨 About the “Durvis” Art Gallery
The “Durvis” Art Gallery is a space dedicated to the creative expression of contemporary artists. The gallery’s aim is to make contemporary artworks accessible to as wide an audience as possible, by showcasing, through exhibitions, both the creative talents of outstanding Latvian artists and masters of applied arts, and the achievements of emerging artists.
The gallery is situated in a building constructed in 1758 in the historic centre of Tukums. It once housed a pharmacy, the laboratory of the Duke’s surgeon Johann Gotlob Groške (1714–1777), as well as a collection of natural history specimens, coins and surgical instruments.
The building is a cultural monument of national importance, known as the Old Pharmacy of Tukums. It retains many 18th-century architectural features, including Rococo-style doors.
The gallery opened in 1988 as the Tukums Museum’s art salon, but was given the name ‘Durvis’ in 1997 when it moved to its current premises.
