ABOUT US

A visit to the Museum of Ancient Bicycles is a fascinating excursion for schoolchildren and families into the history of transportation in Latvia. Located in the historic Spriņģi mill building in Līgatne, where paper production once began, the museum gives schoolchildren the opportunity to step back in time and learn about the role of bicycles in everyday life, sport and society.

Our museum is located in the picturesque town of Līgatne, in the historic Spriņģi mill building, where paper production in Latvia was once born. This place is itself a part of Latvian history. By opening the doors of the Museum of Ancient Bicycles in Līgatne, pupils take a step back in time, learning not only about the history of transport, but also about the social and cultural processes in Latvia in times gone by. We discover how the advent of the bicycle transformed everyday life, shaped communication, commuting habits and leisure opportunities. We tell how the sport united and created national pride in the first races.

OFFER

The museum’s exhibition reveals how the bicycle entered everyday life in Latvia, influencing commuting habits, communication and leisure activities, and the development of sport.

During the tour you will be able to see bicycles produced in Latvia in different eras from the six largest Latvian factories of the pre-war period, including Līva, Ozolnieks, Erenpreis and other manufacturers, as well as printed works, awards, photographs and lamps. The exhibition gives an insight into Latvia’s pre-war industry, the importance of local businesses and the value of craftsmanship. Special attention is paid to the process of bicycle restoration, encouraging interest in the restoration profession and respect for cultural heritage.

The tour is led by the museum owner and lasts 40 minutes to 1 hour. The entrance fee also includes a screening of archive film footage on the history of the bicycle. For larger groups, we offer a two-part tour, with one group exploring the museum and the other going for a walk around the surrounding area of Līgatne (Lustūža and Anfabrika cliffs, Līgatne caves, fish path, etc.).

There are no age restrictions.
