The Berze mill is a remarkable monument of engineering. It was built in 1863 and later rebuilt several times. The Berze water mill complex, with its derivation canal and dam, is the only working water-powered grain processing mill in Latvia.

Orvil Henins regained his grandfather’s property in 1991. It took several years of hard work to renovate the building, make the mill equipment work and reconstruct the dam-works. Today, it is one of the few mills in Latvia that is still in operation. Grain is milled, grits and pearls are produced here. The old equipment is still in place. Old posters remind us of the Soviet era, when the mill was also a carpenter’s shop.

Groups can learn about the historic buildings, the technology of grain processing in the old rural watermills, and the principles and operation of the small

hydropower

plant by prior arrangement.

With the permission of the owner, you can go for a walk to the dam on the river Bērže.
