The largest island of the Daugava was called the Island of the Kings(insula regis) in ancient sources. The name Dole (German: Dahlen) probably originates from the 13th century. The name of the lord of the castle of Old Dole, Dolen. The island was formed as a whole piece of land, separated from the surrounding area by the rippling branches of the Daugava (the Daugava, the Dry Daugava). Before the Riga HPP reservoir was built and the upper part of the island was flooded, Dolė Island was about 8-9 km long, about 3.5 km wide, and today about 5.2 km long. Several Daugava tributaries separated smaller islets from the island (Martins Island, Pea Island, Nolpe Island, etc.). The island has a long and rich history, having been inhabited since at least the 2nd century BC until the present day.

The 1044 ha Doles Island Nature Park was established in 1987 to preserve the unimproved landscape and cultural heritage of Doles Island and to ensure optimal use of recreational resources. It is also a Natura 2000 site of European importance with valuable specially protected biotopes. The central part of the nature park is covered by pine forests, while the Daugava terraces contain meadows and fields, and the territory also includes the Dole Manor complex with a park. Several protected plant species have been preserved on the island. The changing Daugava River and the island of Dole, with its diverse bird species, are interesting all year round for careful birdwatchers, as well as for nature lovers – walkers and cyclists.

The island is best explored during a cycling or hiking trip. The routes are marked in nature, you can choose between the Big (11 km) or Small (9 km) Circle.
