ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Halfway between Old and New Piebalga, at the end of an avenue of hundred-year-old linden trees, a two-storey stone building was a school for almost 100 years. Composer Emils Dārziņš (1875-1910) was born here into a family of teachers. There is a memorial exhibition, and in the large classroom you can hear recordings of E.Dārziņš’s music. On the ground floor there is also an exhibition dedicated to the poet Jānis Sudrabkalns (1894-1975).
In the centre of the exhibition are E.Dārziņš’ baptismal cap and sash; coat, hat and other memorabilia preserved by the composer’s mother. The “Melancholic Waltz”, recordings of choral and solo songs are played in the former large school auditorium. The exhibition includes a piano played by E.Dārziņš, a polyphon and a harmonium of the time. Memorial objects from his last home in Riga. Thematic exhibitions about the Piebalga region and prominent Piebaldziai people. Lectures on the life and work of E.Dārziņš and J.Sudrabkalns.
