ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Founded in 1929 by brothers Reinis (1839-1920) and Matīss (1848-1926), the Kaudzītis Memorial Museum is the oldest memorial museum in Latvia and a monument to school history of the 1860s-70s.
,,In Kalna Kaibēni, Kaudzīte wrote the novel “The Times of the Surveyors” and almost all of his other half a hundred books, conceived the plans for many public events and taught 1229 pupils in the first 14 years of his long teaching career.
From 1868 to 1882 there was a parish school in Kalna Kaibēni Matīss Kaudzīte was its teacher, Reinis – an assistant teacher. In his lessons Kaudzīte tried to teach pupils to observe, judge and do things independently, to try to understand the meaning of practical life things and phenomena, to perceive beauty and rejoice in it.
The furnishings of the house, travel memorabilia and household objects that have survived to this day tell the story of the writers’ lives and their pedagogical, social and literary activities.
In the garden of “Kalna Kaibēnu”, visitors can meet the characters from the novel “The Times of the Surveyors”, the legendary “corner of memories” and the gazebo where Matīss Kaudzīte rested from his gardening work.
