ABOUT THE MUSEUM
One of the most exhibit-rich museums in Latgale with a wide outdoor exposition.
The museum contains materials on the history of the region, as well as works by craftsmen and artists of the region.
The permanent exposition “The Hero’s Homecoming”, dedicated to the 1812.
MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS
Natureexposition
The nature exposition gives visitors an opportunity to get acquainted with the nature of Eastern Latvia. The exhibition depicts four of the region’s most characteristic habitats: “Forest”, “Meadow”, “Swamp”, “Lake” and “Man’s Home and Garden”.
The artistic design of the Nature Department, as well as its original lighting, turns a visit to the exhibition into a fascinating journey into the mysterious realm of living nature.
History exhibition
The Museum’s History exhibition reflects the history of the Ludza region from the earliest times until 1917.
Here you can get acquainted with the following topics:
- ancient hunters’ and fishermen’s way of life on the shores of the Great Lake Ludza;
- making of bone, flint and stone tools and their use in hunting and fishing;
- Stone Age pottery finds;
- 7-13th cent. Latgalian burial sites: Odukalns, Kivtu, Pildas, Ņukši, Mērdzenes, Dzērve.
- Ancient Latgalian jewellery, clothing and weapons.
- Medieval times in Ludza region;
- Ludza region in the Russian Empire

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
Forest birds – during theprogrammepupils get acquainted with Latvian forest birds and their way of life.
Animals in the country – the programme gives an idea about Latvian wild animals and their way of life, develops children’s communicative abilities (to work in groups, express their opinion, listen to others).
Annual holiday programmes – Latvian annual holiday programmes “Meteņi in Latgale Farmstead”, “Easter in Latgale Farmstead”, “Michaelmas Day in Ludza Museum” and “Martins Day in Latgale Farmstead”.
Diversity of Latvian bird species – the programmeprovides participants with information about Latvian birds, their lifestyle and food . Students work in groups and complete various interactive tasks. The aim of these tasks is to develop students’ literacy skills, logical thinking and teamwork.
The programme duration – 40 min.
The programme is intended for upper primary and upper secondary school students. The venue of the programme is the Medieval exhibition room, where the objects in the museum collection are a good reference material for learning about the topic. The aim of the programme is to give an idea of the lifestyle and occupation of people in the Middle Ages, as well as to create an understanding of the medieval events in Ludza from the 13th – 16th centuries.
