Latvia’s largest lake – Lubāns!

The largest inland wetland complex in Latvia – the “Lubāns mitrājs Nature Reserve” – extends around Latvia’s largest lake, Lubāns, providing ample opportunities for recreation and nature observation.

Lubāns Lake and fish ponds are one of the most important resting and feeding places for migratory waterbirds in the country, a nesting site for 29 European species of specially protected birds – the lesser spotted eagle, the sea eagle, the northern swan, the corncrake, the scaup and a place where several globally threatened bird species can be found – the scaup, corncrake, sea eagle, fish eagle.

Hike around Teirumnīki Bog

  • 3 km hike in the bog and pine forest;

Circular hike along the 800 m long Teirumnīki Bog footbridge, continuing through the pine forests around Teirumnīki Bog, exploring the forest by orienteering, making a total of 3 km.

  • Picnic after the hike

As the starting point of the hike is at the LVM rest area near the Teirumnīki bog trail, it is possible to light a fire and have a picnic with takeaway sandwiches at the end of the hike!

Stone Age jewellery workshop and/or Bird quiz

  • Story about Lubāna Lake and nature reserve “Lubāna Wetland

Before getting active it is worth to listen about where we have come! The presentation tells and shows what natural values can be found in the nature reserve “Lubāna Wetland”, how Lubāns behaved before it was dammed and who lived here before us!

  • Stone Age Jewellery Workshop and/or Owl Workshop;

After the educational narrative it is possible to choose an activity:

  • In the Stone Age Jewellery Workshop it is possible to make prototypes of jewellery out of salt dough, taking as examples fragments of jewellery found during archaeological excavations around the Lubāns Lake
  • Lubāns Wetland is a place where many birds live, so everyone has the opportunity to take part in an owl-making workshop. The owls are made of corrugated cardboard and decorated with natural materials.

Birdwatching hike “Birds of Iden

  • Orienteering game in the territory of the Lubāns Wetland Information Centre.
  • Bird-watching hike along the ponds of the Īdeņa River, using binoculars, telescope. During the hike, educational activities and games.
  • During the hike, the main goal is to observe birds in the fish ponds, mainly water birds – swans, geese, ducks, herons, etc. The hike follows the paths of the fish ponds, which are easy to walk and safe for school groups, and at the end we will reach the Idena castle mound, which offers a magnificent view of Lake Lubāna in the distance.
