Valmiera Castle is a remarkable testimony to the history of its time. The castle, with its strong front, mighty defensive walls, ramparts and moats, was the first fortification of the Livonian Order on the right bank of the Gauja River.
In the oldest part of the Old Town – the castle area – Valmiera’s oldest wooden building and new, modern architecture coexist. The Valmiera Museum is surrounded by the castle walls.
The museum’s new exhibition “de Woldemer” takes visitors into the story of ancient Valmiera. It brings together the earliest history of the city and the castle, the world views of Valmierians from times gone by, the power of Hanseatic merchants and the skills of craftsmen.
