Varakļānai Castle – a historical excursion for schools and families
Are you looking for an educational and beautiful excursion destination in Latgale, where history, architecture and nature meet in one place?
Varakļānai Castle is one of the most outstanding monuments of classical architecture in Latvia, enchanting with its elegance and rich history. Surrounded by a picturesque park, the castle offers an opportunity to discover the life of the 18th century nobility and enjoy a peaceful stroll in a romantic landscape park.
As well as the museum and exhibitions, you can also enjoy fascinating guided tours, take part in educational programmes and discover the secrets of the park – from the legendary Love Stone to the historic Jadwiga Chapel. It is the perfect place for school excursions, families and culture lovers who want to experience the historical charm of Latgale.
Varakļānai Castle was built between 1783 and 1789 for Count Michael Jan von der Borch of the Holy Roman Empire, after a design by the Italian architect Vincenzo Macotti, who was invited to Latgale. It is an outstanding and early example of the Classical style in Latvian architecture.
