White Dune of Sparrows
Zvirgzdes Baltā kāpa, Vecumnieku pag.

Zvirgzdes Dune is considered one of the highest inland dunes in Latvia, this dune massif is part of the Taurkalnes Plain parabolic dune distribution area between the former Zemgale Spit and the Baltic Ice Lake. The relative height of the dune massif is 4-8 metres in the western part, but in the east it reaches up to 32.5 metres!

The Zvirgzdes dune area and the surrounding forest are home to wild boar, which can be seen in spring, especially during the rutting season. There are also extensive juniper groves around Zvirgdze Dune – it grows well in sunny areas, is drought-resistant and its berries are used for both medicinal and culinary purposes.

This is the highest point in the Vecumnieki area, and every year on 22 September, the Baltic Unity Day is celebrated here, where all those who wish to commemorate the Latvians and Lithuanians who fought in the legendary Battle of the Sun in 1236 gather.

To get to Zvirgzdes Dune, follow the wooden signs along the forest paths. To observe the immediate surroundings from the viewing platform at the top of the dune, there are two ways to go – along the marked walking path through the woodland, or by the wooden staircase.

For active leisure and longer hikers, there is a 4.5 km long circular walking route marked with green and white paint. Follow the signs and see the dune from a different perspective!

At the foot of the dune there is a rest area with a shelter, benches, a table and a designated fire pit.

When outdoors, it’s important to remember not to get wet in the forest and to respect the environment!
