ABOUT US

Daugavpils Fortress is home to the second largest colony of hibernating bats in the Baltic States. The fortress walls are highly humid and retain a relative warmth in winter, so there is a wide range of different microclimates throughout the fortress in which bats can take shelter, depending on the severity of the winter and the direction of the wind.
The Bat Centre, located in the Nikolay Gate of Daugavpils Fortress, features bat cages, a stamp collection with bats, artworks with bat images, and a bat lifestyle and environment.
The Bat Centre also offers day and night tours of the Fortress, which provide an opportunity not only to learn what bats like, how they hibernate, breed and care for their young, but also to see their roost. During the night excursion there is a possibility to meet some of the bats in person.

EXCURSIONS

Daugavpils Bat Centre offers to participate in day or night excursions, which take place during the summer season (May – September), as it is forbidden to disturb bats during the winter.

Excursions in Latvian, Russian and English take place in the fortress environment.
