The beautiful red brick building (1897) was built as the Kraukļi parish school almost at the same time as Cesvaine Castle. On the outer walls of the building, some bricks are marked with more than 120-year-old inscriptions and possibly even the signature of the Druviena brickmaker.
VISIT:
* The old Kraukļi school building now houses a library and a local cultural centre, where local history exhibitions, thematic exhibitions, local events and the folklore group “Krauklēnieši” are held.
* On the second floor of the building is a museum – a school with classrooms as they looked after 2006, when the school closed. There is also an independent exposition on the life and work of Elvira Baldina, the centenarian actress, and ex-libri drawn by Aina Karlsone, as well as other unpublished local history materials about the former Kraukļi and Kārklu parishes, their notable people and places.
* Nearby – a memorial stone to the national partisans of Kārlis Krēmer’s group, whose aim was to prevent the consolidation of Soviet power in Cesvaine and the surrounding parishes between 1944 and 1953.
* Opposite the school – the old parish house and fire station, where you can book a visit.
