The Šlītere Trail (1.2 km), located next to the Šlītere Lighthouse, is unique because it passes through the strict regime zone of the National Park, allowing you to see the richest part of the park in terms of plant and animal species. Natural processes have been undisturbed here for almost a century, so you will see old, natural broadleaf (deciduous) and spruce forests with large-dimensioned trees and fallen trees. The trail also crosses a calcareous herbaceous bog and a waterlogged amoeba. The natural forest and swamp is home to many rare and endangered plant and animal species, including insect and moss species that have never been found anywhere else in Latvia.
In 1923, the Šlītere Blue Mountains Cliff or the old shore of the Baltic Ice Lake and the adjacent 1100 ha lowland forest were separated from the economic forests and a protected nature area “Šlītere Nature Monument” was established. It became the core of the Slītere State Reserve, which was renamed a national park in 2000.
Šlītere Trail is a nature education centre’s educational trail.
