On the occasion of the artist’s 155th anniversary, in May 2021, on the steps of St. Janis Evangelical Lutheran Church, seven life-size bronze sculptures depicting images from Janis Rozentāls’ painting “After the Service” will be installed. The seven figures represent different social groups, including Rozentāls’ parents, his mother Lavīze and father Miķelis. As is well known, Jānis Rozentāls spent many Sundays in his youth at the Saldus church, observing the churchgoers, photographing and sketching the people who lived in Saldus and the people he knew. The people of our region, immortalised 127 years ago in a painting, have now been transformed into bronze sculptures and stand next to us in the very centre of Saldus.
The sculptures were created by sculptor Sandis Aispurs.
