E. Schneider Square
Pavilosta, South Kurzeme region
Originally planned as a market square, it was called and used as such until the 1930s. In the 1950s the square was renamed Pioneer Square. In the early 1990s, the square was named after Ernest Schneider (1892-1948), a teacher, public worker and founder of village greening. On 30 August 1992 – the centenary of the teacher’s birth – a memorial stone was erected at 2 E. Schneider Square, where the teacher lived and worked. The building, which was built as a pharmacy and later became the Pāvilosta Primary School, today houses the Pāvilosta Art School. The square displays wood carvings made by students of the Liepaja Art Secondary School’s Woodcarving Class. One of the old fishermen’s houses at E.Šneiders laukums 10 has been organically integrated into the landscape of the square.
In 2014, a lighthouse was installed in E. Šneiders Square. As the last resting place of many fishermen in Pāvilosta is the bottom of the sea, this object is a memorial to fishermen and fishing. Since time immemorial, the symbol of the lighthouse has served fishermen as a safety, a shore, a light and a shelter in times of need.
