On 22 May 1879, German Baron Otto Friedrich von Lilienfeld founded a port town named after his brother – Governor of Courland (1868-1885) Paul Lilienfeld – Paulshafen – Pāvilosta and laid the foundation stone for the first stone building in Pāvilosta – a pilot house.
In 2007, the museum building, the boathouse and the pavement of the bank of the Sava River were included in the list of State Protection Monuments as an architectural monument of local importance.
In 1979, to mark the centenary of Pāvilosta, an exhibition reflecting the history of Pāvilosta was held in the House of Culture. Seeing this rich range of materials and unique exhibits, the idea of creating a museum in Pāvilosta was born.
On 17 November 1992, the Pāvilosta Regional Research Museum opened its doors to the public.
