Walking along the approximately 1 km long (one way) Kaltene nature trail with a bird-watching tower, you will learn a lot of interesting things about the birds that live on the Latvian coast and migratory birds as well. The trail section has a viewing platform and a tower for birdwatching all year round. Spring and the second half of summer is the best time to visit the Kaltene Bird Trail, but it is also worth doing in winter, as long as the sea is not frozen. There is a small car park and an outdoor dry toilet at the nature trail. The trail runs along the very edge of the sea to the north of Kaltene. The view of the sea is often blocked by stands of sedges and reeds, behind which many water and coastal birds – herons, gulls, ducks, swans, as well as small birds that mainly stay there and raise their offspring – feel at home in the sea. Water birds and other small birds live here in the reeds and grassland of the rocky shore of the Kaltene seafront, where they start nesting and brooding in spring. Therefore, it is not possible to carry out management work (reed and grass cutting) on the path until mid-summer in order not to disturb the nesting birds. Only after the birds have finished nesting and the chicks have grown up can mowing and other management work on the nature trail be continued. The sea is interesting not only for its birds, but also for its many rocks, the largest of which is the Grīļi boulder – the largest sea rock in Latvia. It is 2.4 m high, 15 m in circumference and 25 cubic metres in volume.
