Liepāja-Rožu laukums
Rose Square
Rožu laukums, Liepāja

Rose Square is the heart and meeting place of the city. True to its name, its constant asset is the rose, which has been planted here for more than a hundred years. In spring, crocuses are the first to bloom, followed by daffodils and tulips, and in summer, roses bloom here. In winter, the square transforms into a romantic Christmas island.

Historically, this was the site of the New Market. The buildings adjacent to the square, with their two towers, still bear witness to this fact. In 1910, after the market had moved to Kuršu Street, where it still stands, the city authorities decided to create an open garden with roses on the square. It was designed in a strictly geometric composition with a rose bed in the centre and symmetrically arranged paths. The Rose Square got its present name in 1911.

On the concrete border of the rose bed, you can see the signs of Liepāja’s twin cities, each facing the direction of the respective city. The Manchurian Walnut Tree, a remarkable and scenic national tree, grows nearby.

If you want to take a guided tour of Liepāja, from 1 June to 31 August you can meet a guide with Liepāja’s green and red flag in his hand at 12 noon every day in Rose Square for a two-hour tour of Liepāja.
