Wine Hill – the symbol of Sabile
The Sabile Wine Hill can definitely be considered the symbol of Sabile. The coat of arms of Sabile also depicts a bunch of grapes.
The Sabile Wine Hill is unique in that it has been entered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the northernmost vineyard where grapes grow in the open air. The top of the hill is about 34 metres above the level of the city and the Abava River and 115 metres above sea level.
The total area of the vineyard is 1.5 ha. The vines are regularly replenished on the Vine Hill, with around 30 different vine varieties, totalling around 800 plants. Most of them are varieties developed by the well-known Latvian breeder Pauls Sukatnieks. The most abundant grape variety on Vīna Hill is the ‘Zilga’. The Vīna hill also has exotic plants such as peaches, apricots and walnuts.
