The 127 m high hill is an ancient sanctuary, medieval cemetery and nature reserve. At the entrance to the sanctuary is also an ancient Upurakstone, which, once pushed down the mountain, is now placed at the top, where it is believed to have been.

The top of the mountain marks the centre of this place of power, where the greatest flow of energy occurs.

At the top of the hill is a 38.5 metre high lookout tower, which offers a wide panoramic view of the Zilaiskalns Nature Reserve and beyond. A 3.5 km long circular nature trail – the Zilākalns Health Trail – leads along the slopes of the hill .

There is a well-maintained rest area and information boards. At the foot of Zilākalns there is the Zilākalns Cultural and Historical Visitor Centre, where permanent and virtual exhibitions are on display and tourist information is available.
