The wetlands surrounding Lake Žuvintas are one of the most important habitats in Lithuania for a variety of bird species, including significant populations of reed bunting, lesser spotted sandpiper, crane and bluebird. A special permit is required to explore the beauty of this protected area, but the Lake Žuvintas Nature Trail is open to all visitors. The trail is only 500 metres long, so it’s not a very adventurous walk, but the views from the lookout tower at the end of the trail are simply spectacular. It is worth bringing binoculars to get the best impressions, especially during the bird migration in autumn and spring. Lake Žuvintas, however, is one of only two places in Lithuania where the extremely rare sedge warbler can be seen.
