On the way to the trail there is a sulphur watercourse on the left (there is a sign). After about 1 km there is a forest trail on the left. There are wooden footbridges in wet places. Follow the signs.
Description. The total area of the bog is 96 hectares.
There are 17 specially protected species of plants, 9 birds, 14 invertebrates and 2 amphibians. In 2005, a species of moss previously unknown in Latvia was found here.
In the early 20th century, the water and mud of the sulphur streams flowing near the bog were used to treat rheumatism in the health institution built there, which operated until 1940.
All waters of the bog have a high degree of mineralisation. The water of the Devil’s Eye Spring contains hydrogen sulphide. The Devil’s Eye or Bath Stream flows from it, and further into the marsh is the Smirnieku Brook. Beavers have chosen them for their dams.
Notes: The Chužu Swamp and the Sulphur Stream can be viewed along a 4 km-long trail, part of which has wooden footbridges.
