The construction of the Livonian Order castle in Kandava began in 1254. The name Knights ‘ Castle Hill ( 68 m above sea level) is also derived from the location of the Knights’ Castle on this hill. The castle was the fortified castle or residence of the Livonian Order’s fogt (judge), which was allegedly built between 1253 and 1259. At that time, the Crusader war route passed through Kurzeme from Riga. The castle was inhabited until 1750. However, it was then declared uninhabitable and, over time, turned into ruins. The tower has been preserved. It is popularly known as the Powder Tower, because gunpowder was stored here during the reign of Duke Jacob.
