The Elektrum Energy Centre in Jūrmala invites schoolchildren and pre-school groups to explore the world of energy through practical and exciting activities. Experiments, games, team tasks and real-life examples help children understand how electricity is generated, how it reaches our homes, and how to use energy wisely and responsibly. The sessions are free of charge and suitable for children from pre-school age up to Year 12.

Educational sessions for schoolchildren

The Elektrum Energy Centre offers lessons tailored to different age groups on energy, electricity, energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and sustainability.

During the lessons, theoretical knowledge is supplemented with experiments, games, practical tasks and team work. Pupils develop skills in research, collaboration, data analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving.

Lesson programmes

Age group: pre-school and Years 1–3
Duration: up to 1 hour
Group size: up to 25 children

Together with Elektrum’s superhero Lelde and the cartoon character Gustav, children embark on an adventure to find and defeat the energy monsters.

Through games, creative tasks and other activities, children learn how to use electricity, water and heat more wisely in their everyday lives.

The session is ideal as an introduction to the topics of energy and energy efficiency.

Age group: Year 4
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Group size: up to 25 pupils

Why do shadows form? Why does a pencil in a glass of water appear bent? How is sound produced and propagated?

Through hands-on experiments, pupils explore the properties of light and sound and link what they have learnt in science lessons to processes they observe in everyday life.

It is recommended that pupils attend this session after they have already been introduced to the basics of light and sound in class.

Age group: Years 5–6
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Group size: up to 25 pupils

Pupils become energy detectives and set off on a fact-finding mission to discover how electricity is generated and how it reaches the electrical appliances we use every day.

Through hands-on activities, pupils learn about different energy resources, the journey electricity takes from the power station to their homes, and discover how to use electricity more wisely and responsibly.

Age group: Years 7–9
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Group size: up to 25 pupils

How can electricity be generated from the sun, wind and water?

Through hands-on experiments, pupils explore various renewable energy sources and analyse the factors that influence the amount of electricity generated.

During the lesson, pupils develop their data analysis and reasoning skills, whilst gaining a practical understanding of the potential uses of solar, wind and hydro energy.

Age group: Years 10–12
Duration: 1–1.5 hours
Group size: up to 25 pupils

Pupils take on the roles of energy and urban planning experts and seek solutions for creating a sustainable and climate-neutral city.

Working in teams, they analyse data, plan solar and wind energy solutions, and assess their costs and environmental impact.

The session develops critical thinking, problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions.

The ‘Sustainable City’ programme is part of the ESF Plus project ‘STEM and civic engagement activities for a broader educational experience and career choices’.
