In Saulkrasti, at the White Dune, there are several interesting environmental objects that encourage people to listen and look more closely at nature. Hedgehog mum Frieda and Fredis the bunny friendly encourage visitors not to get foggy and to go into nature quietly – without making noise. The Insect Trail draws attention to the fact that we are surrounded by very active life every day – a variety of insects that we often don’t even notice. And in a listening device – a specially designed horn – you can listen to the sound of sea waves and pine trees. Information boards and signs provide information about the natural values of the area and the process of the formation of the White Dune.
The environmental design object ENTRANCE GATES is a stylised silhouette of the White Dune. One side of the gate is depicted in simple geometric shapes, while the other is sloping. A closer look at the texture of the sloping part reveals relief and patterns that suggest the retreat of the White Dune over time.
At the ENTRANCE GATE, visitors are greeted by Frieda the Hedgehog, who sits on a bench and carefully watches those who come to the White Dune, hoping that Frieda’s home – the surrounding ecosystem – will be treated with respect.
The ENTRANCE GATE symbolises the entrance to a world of nature and cultural history, where nature and man can coexist amicably – without harming or disturbing each other and building respectful relationships.
Environmental design object DON’T LEAVE THE TRAIL!
The object draws attention to the life that bustles around us every day and that we often don’t even notice. It invites us not to stray from specially created paths and footpaths in order not to trample on insects and their habitat – the ecosystem.
Of course, insects and humans cross paths at some point, so every step should be taken with caution!
Environmental design object DO NOT MOVE!
This work depicts Frieda the hedgehog, laying her hand on a blanket under which her three little hedgehogs are sleeping.
She puts her free hand to her mouth and asks them not to wake her children and not to make noise.
Frieda encourages people to go into nature quietly and observantly, as this is the only way to notice what is happening in nature and have a better chance
of seeing the hedgehogs, hares, squirrels and various insects that live nearby.
Environmental design object DON’T POLLUTE NATURE!
A work dedicated to the theme of pollution, depicting Fred the bunny, a friend of Frieda the hedgehog, a forest dweller. The bunny sits on a bench, encouraging visitors to the White Dune in Saulkrasti to be clean and not to litter. The hare points out that rubbish, if any, should be thrown in the rubbish bin. But it’s best to always take it with you!
Environmental design object LISTEN TO NATURE
The listening device in the shape of a rook allows you to hear the nuances of nature’s sounds – sea waves, pine trees and wind.
The design samples are images of listening devices used by European armies in the First World War, when radar had not yet been invented. These devices were used by specially trained people to listen to the sky so that they could hear planes approaching.
All objects and information have been created within the framework of the project LIFE13 ENV/LV/000839 “LIFE Ecosystem Services” implemented by the Nature Conservation Agency, Saulkrasti Municipality and the association “Baltic Coasts”, financed by the European Union and the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund
