ABOUT US

The Fashion Museum is located in Old Riga, near the House of the Blackheads – in an ancient street with a rich history, which can be felt in the carefully restored museum premises, the oldest part of which dates back to the 14th century. The museum collaborates with the Alexander Vassiliev Foundation to present dozens of costumes and a large number of accessories from the collection of the renowned fashion historian and collector in thematic exhibitions and a permanent exhibition. The collection of Alexander Vassilyev is considered one of the three most important private collections of costumes in the world. The Fashion Museum offers a unique opportunity to see objects from this collection throughout the year in carefully considered exhibitions that change every six months, allowing you to delve into a particular theme or period.

A lesson for schoolchildren “How is a costume made?”

A fun and creative activity for younger pupils (7-10 years).

We all wear clothes and follow fashion willy-nilly. Clothes are our second skin and can say a lot about us. But how are clothes really made? In this session, we will talk and work together in practical and creative ways to find the answers to these and other questions:
What is a designer, a sketch, a pattern?
What is fabric and how does it differ from knitwear?
What fabrics are used, what are they made of?
How have we arrived at the variety of colours and prints in today’s garments?
Why is it important to know your size, and what does it really say on the labels that are most often sewn into the side seams of clothes?
How are clothes made, and how did they used to be made?
How are clothes ironed today, and how did they used to be made?
What is a fashion house, and what goes on in it?

Finally, we will visit the Fashion Museum’s exhibition and together we will search for the answer to the question “What is fashion?”

Duration: 1-1,2 h

Class “How to make a costume. Professions”

For senior pupils.

We all wear clothes, but how exactly do we get there? Who invents and creates, photographs, draws and displays it? How do clothes get to the shops? What materials and technologies are used to create clothes? Maybe one of the professions involved in making clothes piques your interest and later becomes a career choice?

We will talk and work together to find answers to these and other questions:
– What is a fashion house, and what happens in it?
– What is a fashion designer?
– How do you get from an idea to a sketch?
– What is a pattern, why is it needed and what does it mean?
– What is the role of the designer and the technologist, what do they do?
– How do you sew and embroider clothes, and how did you used to do it?
– What role do models, photographers, magazine editors and bloggers play in promoting fashion?
– What is a fashion house’s brand and why is it important?
We’ll also learn about different types of fabrics, explore what fabric composition is and why you need to know it, talk about sizing and study pre-selection irons. Finally, we’ll visit the Fashion Museum’s exhibition and explore together the question “What is fashion?”

Duration: 1-1,2 h
