Kolka Livs’ Meeting House offers an insight into the culture, traditional activities, language and cultural heritage of the Livs of the North Baltic Sea Region.

Lesson “Insight into Liv culture

Lesson duration 60-80 minutes.

Target audience – primary school students.

The Livs are one of the Finno-Ugric peoples of the Baltic Sea, who once inhabited a large area of Latvia. Nowadays, Kolka is traditionally considered to be a Liv village in Northern Kurzeme. Kolka and other seaside villages form the cultural space of the Liv seaside villages, which, together with the Liv language and the ancient system of customs and beliefs, can be considered the basis of traditional Liv culture. The traditional culture of the Livs is a unique asset that is on the verge of extinction.

The Livs’ Meeting House preserves a wealth of information and historical evidence about ancient Liv life, customs, culture and language.

The aim of the lesson is to introduce the young generation to the traditional culture of the Livs, which is closely intertwined with both Latvian culture and language, through games and practical activities.
