Kolkasrags Pine Trail is located on the Baltic Sea coast near Kolkasrags, a resting and feeding place for birds during spring and autumn migrations.
The nature trail leads through a dune forest across grey and white dunes to a sand dune.
Due to the presence of the sea and the poor growing conditions, the pine forest grows not only typical plants such as blueberries, heather, chanterelles but also the rare, protected sand carnation(Dianthus arenarius). Old pines and fallen trees are a habitat for lichens and insects.
The sand of the dunes was blown by the wind, creating a phenomenon of quicksand that buried the remaining trees and threatened homes and farms. On the trail you will see pine trees that are a hundred years old or more, up to two or three metres deep in the sand, witnesses of these times.
The trail route includes a 15 m high wooden tower for seascape and bird watching.
The best time to visit is during the snow-free season. The trail is particularly beautiful in spring and early summer, when the pine trees are in bloom: the low branches of the pine trees form unique flowering carpets. However, this is not the best time for people with pollen allergies to visit the trail.
Trailhead, approx. 300 m, dirt, then boardwalk. The trail can be walked in all weather conditions. Part of the trail is on a seawall, where there is no specific surface. Average width of the trail 1 m.
