It flows out of Lake Jērkule. It flows through the Idumea Upland, through an agricultural, reclaimed and densely populated area. In the lower reaches near Murjāņi a deep ravine. Major tributaries: Vilkkalnu brook, Kaņepju brook. The 26-kilometre-long river is famous for its numerous sandstone cliffs, where the remains of armoured fish can be found. Stories say that in ancient times the local population gave the sandstone outcrops poetic names such as Knight’s Leap, Andrew’s Rock, Martin’s Wall and Lorelei. In spring, the banks of the Loja River are abundant with flowers and honeysuckles, and in autumn with colourful leaves.
