Medema Bog is located in the south-eastern part of Marupe municipality. Its territory borders with Olaine municipality. The peat bog covers 3400 ha. Currently, peat extraction in Medema bog is no longer taking place and part of the bog has been developed. Part of the area is afforested. The greatest plant diversity is found in the relatively undisturbed parts of Medema bog, where elements characteristic of high and transitional bogs have been preserved. A rich fauna of large mammals can be observed in Medema Bog and the adjacent forested areas. The surveys of the area have found red deer, elk, roe deer, foxes, hares, beavers and tracks of small mammals. The area also has a very rich bird fauna with more than 100 bird species. The Mārupīte River flows out of the Medema Swamp. It starts between Tīraini and Stūnīši or Gaismām, meeting several drainage ditches and marsh lakes.

In order to create an opportunity for the public to spend their free time actively in nature, learning about the marsh ecosystem, the project “Improvement of the walking path in Medema marsh” (No 22-04-AL04- A019.2205-000001) was implemented in 2023. The project includes the creation of a 1.3 km long (one-way) walking trail with a number of landscaping elements – specially designed benches, bridges, reference information stands, as well as a photo frame to capture the serene landscape of the marsh lake. To cross the wetlands, a 230 m long wooden footbridge has been built in one of the trail sections.

All along the trail, white and yellow markers on trees help to navigate the route. Please note that the trail is not suitable for strollers, as the route passes through forest and marshy areas.
