The Latgale Liberation Monument (popularly known as “Latgale Mara”) is the most recognisable symbol of Rezekne. Dedicated in 1920. It embodies the idea of freedom and unity of the Latvian state. The monument was unveiled in 1939 (by artist L. Tomašickis, sculptor K. The bronze sculptural composition consists of: a chain-slayer, symbolising the freedom won by the heroic sons of Latgale over foreign powers, a kneeling girl crowns the liberator with an oak-leaved wreath, and over both figures – a national damsel holding a golden cross in her hand – symbolising faith and satisfaction for the regained freedom.

1940The monument was toppled in 1943, restored in 1943 and destroyed by the ruling authorities in 1950. In 1992, with funds donated by the people, the monument was raised again in all its glory (sculptor A. Jansons).
