Ragakāpa Nature Park is located in the eastern part of the city, to the west of the Lielupe estuary, with a total area of 84 ha. Ragakāpa is an 800 m long and 100 m wide dune embankment transformed by wind activity.
The territory of the
Nature
Park is home to very old pine stands, which are ~ 340 years old, as well as several rare and protected plant and fungi species (meadow buttercup, Baltic donis, green-flowered nightshade, spiny cordgrass, creeping buttercup, sandwort, Hadrian’s earthworm, etc.), and several rare and protected species of plants and fungi (meadow buttercup, Baltic donis, green-flowered nightshade, spiny cordgrass, creeping buttercup, sandy carnation, Hadrian’s earthworm, etc.).
In 2004, at the invitation of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia, Jūrmala, together with 13 other Latvian Baltic coastal municipalities, joined the European Union LIFE-Nature project “Protection and Management of Coastal Habitats in Latvia”. Within the framework of the project, the City of Jūrmala decided to clean up the territory of the Nature Park “Ragakāpa” – an informative ecotrail improvement project was developed and implemented.
The ecotrail consists of 4 separate trails – Nature Viewing Trail, Insect Trail, Pine Trail and Plant Trail. The trails have wide viewing platforms, safe and comfortable stairs, benches, waste bins, information signs and boards, as well as restoration of eroded areas (dunes).
We invite you to
be respectful of the work we have invested and the environment and to use only the well-maintained trails for your walks in the protected area!
