A unique open-air picture gallery has been created in Caurumkroga, where the works of the local artist Janis Stanislavs Roze are permanently displayed. Jānis Staņislavs Roze (1823-1897) was the first major Latvian portraitist. His life’s journey began right here, in the Kocēni Municipality’s “Caurumkrog”, now “Saulītės”.

The initiative group “Savam novads”, together with landscape designer Vineta Radziņa, have placed images of Janis Roze’s artworks, including his self-portrait, on the walls of the former inn. A bicycle rack resembling a horse slot is located next to the open-air gallery. The bicycle shed was created by pupils of the Kocēni Primary School from the local history group, together with their parents and teachers.
