Swifts and lapwings, meadow pipits and grebes nest here, and ospreys and dunnocks nest in the wetter parts of the meadows. Monk seals also nest in the floodplain of the Eķinupe River, and a barn owl has been spotted hunting. Burtnieks is an important nesting site for waterbirds. The reedbed is used as a nesting site by the rare reed coots, and in spring the number of migrating waterbirds in the meadows around Lake Burtnieki reaches several thousand. The forests of Vidusburtnieks are an important nesting site for Ural Owls, and Sea Eagles have also been observed over the meadows of Vidusburtnieks during the nesting season.
