During the First Free State, the Crown Garden was a favourite place of rest and amusement for the wealthy citizens of Jēkabpils. The park was made famous by the geodetic arc measured by Vilhelm Struve (1793-1864), an astronomer and geodesist and professor at the University of Tartu. The Struve geodetic circle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The UNESCO World Heritage List includes 34 Struve geodetic arc points in 10 countries, including Latvia. One of them is in Jēkabpils in the Struve Park.
