The Swedish Gate was built in 1688 and is decorated with the coat of arms of the Barons of Corfu, carved in Gotland sandstone, a silver sphere and a masquerade in the central part of the gate. Two ominous-looking stone guard posts stood in niches on either side of the Priekule Manor gateway. Before World War II, there was a belief that if the gate guards were to have their navel knocked off, then that person would experience happiness. Today, the Swedish Gate is guarded by wooden guards made by a local craftsman, and the belief about kissing the poor is still valid.
