A small museum, popular with school groups, which houses a unique exhibit – the casting mould of the first Latvian sugar factory – a clay cone decorated with wood and wooden hoops and other objects of everyday life from ancient times. In 2017, the Zuru Local History Exhibition received the Kurzeme Tourism Association Award “Lielais Jēkabs” in the nomination “The Great Story of the Kurzeme Exhibit”. The exposition surprised tourism professionals with a unique exhibit – the casting mould of the first Latvian sugar factory’s sugar head, which is a clay cone finished with wooden hoops. The sugar factory in Zūrės was established in 1838 thanks to the entrepreneurial talent of Count Gustav von Lamzdorff. He imported the first sugar beet seeds from Germany, planted 100 pūrvietas and invited a specialist to open a sugar factory. The produce was mainly used for the Count’s own distillery, but other people with purchasing power also had a sweet tooth.
