Embute Nature Park, known as the Embute Valley, is one of the most beautiful, interesting and mysterious places in Kurzeme. There is no other place in Latvia where the entrance gate to the nature park is symbolised by stylised swords with shields on either side of the road, creating a mythical and dignified atmosphere. The history of the Embute area is the subject of many tales and legends. One of the best known is the romantic tale of the love between the Curonian leader Indulis and the daughter of the German Komtur, Aria. The oaks of Aria and Indulis still stand where they first met.
The nature
park was established in 1977 as the Embute Hills Complex Nature Reserve covering an area of 481 ha. Embūte Nature Park is a Natura 2000 site.
In the valley you will see the ruins of the Embute Lutheran Church, the ruins of the Embute Manor and the German Knights’ Castle, the Joda Dam, Joda Down, the Curonian or Indulis Castle Mound, the Pilskalns Spring and much more. Information boards and tablets have been placed in the territory of the valley for tourists, an eco-trail has been created, and a resting place has been set up.
