Educational lesson about the stories of Gulbene railway people “INSIDE THE RAILWAY TRACK”

The lesson is included in the cultural education programme “Latvian School Bag”

Target audience: 5th – 9th grade

Lesson length: 60 minutes

Description. The shoes symbolise the stories of these people. Pupils are invited to participate in learning about the influence of the railway on the cultural and historical development of Vecgulbene. It is an opportunity to learn about real stories and historical experiences from the lives of those who worked at the Gulbene railway junction and their fellow workers, as well as other residents and visitors of Gulbene.

Lesson “TRAINBUILDING

Target audience: grades 1-3

Lesson length: 60 minutes

Description: Through questions and answers, the history of railway development will be explored and the future of railways will be outlined. In the practical part of the lesson, pupils will have to build their own paper model of a train of the future and take part in a race to launch it.

Detective“THE LOST BUTTON

Target audience: 1st-4th grade

Lesson length: 60 minutes

Description: Playing the role of a detective, pupils have to find out who is responsible for the button’s disappearance by using their Latvian language, social studies and mathematics skills.

Lesson “MATERIAL SCIENCE

Target audience: 4th-6th grade

Lesson length: 60 minutes

Description: The questions and answers will explore the railway industry, which is a very clear reflection of the technical progress and development of mankind in general, the use of different materials and raw materials (material science). In the practical part of the lesson, students will make one unusual substance out of three familiar ones – “Clever Plasticine”.

Lesson “THE RAILWAY CHALLENGE

Target audience: Grades 7-12

Lesson length: 60 minutes

Description: Questions and answers will explore the different challenges that engineers have faced throughout the history of railway development. In the practical part of the lesson, participants will be divided into teams and tasked with solving a specific engineering problem with the same amount of materials in a given time – to build a railway bridge that is as long as possible and at the same time as strong as possible. All teams will be load-tested at the end of the session.

IIC “Railways and Steam” Entrance fee:

  • Pupils, students, pensioners and disabled persons – 5,00 EUR
  • Adults – 6,50 EUR
  • Children from 4 to 6 y.o.
  • 2,50 EUR
  • Family ticket (1 or 2 adults and children up to 18 y.o.) – 13,00 EUR
  • Thematic lesson “Step into the railwayman’s shoes” – 6,50 EUR (per person)
  • Thematic lesson – 3,00 EUR (per person)
    Thematic lesson + excursion – 6,50 EUR (per person)
  • Break-out room – 25 EUR (per team)

IMPORTANT

For students and teachers of educational institutions of the Gulbenemunicipality, the visit to the IIC “Railways and Steam” is free of charge (when teachers conduct lessons with materials they have brought with them).

Advance booking is required.

The Centre has a souvenir shop.

The Gulbene electric train (May-September) also runs from Gulbene railway station.

Next to the station on the other side of the tracks is the depot of SIA “Gulbene-Alūksnes bānītis”.
