Jelgava City Library is the largest public library in Zemgale. The library building is an architectural monument of local importance: its facade balcony is decorated with 19th century cast-iron ornaments and is a testimony to the architecture of its time with an unusual fate, which you can learn about on a guided tour.

The library has the only Krišjānis Barons Hall in Latvia with wall paintings by the artist Andrejs Zvejnieks and stained-glass windows by the old master of stained glass Esther Bormanes, which was created in the library in 1985. The centrepiece of the Barons’ Hall is Krišjānis Barons, surrounded by 10 other paintings that reflect the life of a man through the depiction of Latvian folk songs. The hall was restored in 2018 and is now open to the public. Krišjānis Barons was a Latvian folklorist, writer and publicist, one of the most important symbols of national identity for every Latvian.
