Ancient stories say that a blacksmith used to live in this cave. The smithy and the outcrop have been a protected geological and geomorphological natural monument of national importance since 1974, as well as a protected biotope of European Union importance. For a long time it was considered the longest cave in Latvia.
It is a light, loose sandstone cave 46 m long, up to 5.7 m wide and 2 m high, located on the right bank of the Strīķupe River on the side of the Strīķu-Lenču road (near the highway bridge).
Kalējala is a protected geological natural monument, located in the Gauja National Park.
