Maija Park was created in the 19th century, when romantic castle ruins were fashionable in park architecture. The oldest name of the park is Alekša Park, whose rows of tall lime trees were planted by E.Veidenbaums’ grandfather Kaspars Veidenbaums, who at that time was the gardener of the Cesis castle manor. The park features the sculpture “Fight with the Centaur” by the outstanding Latvian sculptor Kārlis Jansons.

In 2005, Cēsis became the first town in Latvia to host a pair of black swans from Lisbon. Gracefully swimming in the pond of the city’s most magnificent park, the swans have won the admiration of visitors. The majestic posture of the birds also embodies the self-confidence, peace and hospitality of the city of Cesis.

Maija Park has a large area dedicated to children. There are attractions suitable for children of different ages, outdoor tennis tables, a bicycle park and a skate park.
