In 1399, the German Crusaders built a mighty three-storey stone castle with 6 towers, 3 gates and 2 fore castles on the castle hill between the Great and Small Lake Ludza to protect the eastern borders of the Livonian Order. The castle was built of grey rubble and red brick, decorated with black glazed brick. The ruins of the castle are a favourite resting place for townspeople and visitors, offering the most beautiful panoramic view of the city.
