Staburags is a unique post-glacial natural object – a rock outcrop of freshwater limestone formed by springs and is the most characteristic shale rock formation in Latvia. Staburags is located on the right bank of the Rauna valley, 800 m upstream of the Rauna – Jaunrauna road bridge, about 1.5 km from the centre of Rauna. It was formed by the deposition and cementation of spring mud.

The attraction is a honeycomb rock formation about 3,5 m high and 17 m long, formed by the calcification of moss in the calcium carbonate-containing spring water over many centuries. The spring that flows over Staburag continues to grow it today. The crater has a niche up to 1.1 m high and 1.3 m deep, where the waters of the springs flow down the slope.
The total length of the stepped cliff is 35 m.

The attraction is easily accessible. There is a trail for visitors to the attraction.
