Built in the second half of the 14th century, it was one of the main winter residences of the Archbishop of Riga from September to February, survived nine attacks and is now one of the largest and best preserved castle ruins in Latvia.

Visitors can climb the castle’s observation tower and see the small town of Raunas from above at any time of the year. The key to the observation tower is kept in the public toilet, in front of the guard (in the centre, not in the ruins, Rīgas iela 1C, Rauna).

Further information is available at the Rauna TIC, during opening hours or in advance by contacting tel. 20113881
